Lower School students focus on movement and create the first building blocks for physical education at Dawson. They learn to hit a tennis ball, kick a soccer ball, catch a lacrosse ball; they even take part in a yo-yo contest! Lower school students learn to receive direction, work in pairs, work in groups of different gender, and gain confidence in physical pursuits.
Middle School students continue to build on movement education and add athletic preparation. They learn sports rules, develop sportsmanship, and, when playing in competitive games, experience outcomes. Interscholastic team sports begin in sixth grade.
Upper School students continue to build their sportsmanship skills, have fun, and try new things. Participation in team sports is an essential part of the Dawson experience. Students decide how much competition they want, since the focus is not just on competition but on participation and inclusion. On the many Dawson championship-caliber teams, student-athletes build their confidence to compete at the highest level of Colorado secondary school athletics.
