Sports are a great way to interact with others-and not just with those in your own grade. It's a powerful experience to try something new, thinking you won't like it-but ending up loving it. Test yourself! You'll have support if you need it-and recognition if you earn it-outside the classroom (of course you'll have them in the classroom, too). Balancing athletics and academics in a top rated school helps you translate success from one area to another and gain confidence.
Dawson offers 13 boys and girls sports on the varsity, junior varsity and middle school levels that compete as members of the Colorado High School Activities Association (CHSAA) and the Mile High Conference.
In the fall students can compete in boys and girls cross country, boys golf, boys tennis, boys soccer, volleyball and softball. Boys and girls basketball are Dawson’s winter teams while girls soccer, boys lacrosse, baseball, canoe and kayak and girls tennis compete in the spring.

Students focus on movement and create the first building blocks for physical education at Dawson. They learn to hit a tennis ball, kick a soccer ball, catch a lacrosse ball; maybe even take part in a yo-yo contest! Lower school students learn to receive direction, work in pairs, work in groups of different gender, and gain confidence in physical pursuits. They develop agility, balance, and co-ordination in a wholesome, non-competitive environment.
The goal is participation and fitness. Students continue to build on movement education and add athletic preparation. They learn sports rules, develop sportsmanship, and, when playing in competitive games, experience outcomes. Interscholastic team sports are in full swing in seventh grade, and everybody who wants to be on a team, is, and gets equal playing time over the course of a season.
Dawson sent 9 teams into post season play last year, and 30 Dawson athletes received All-League or All-State honors. Students continue to build their sportsmanship skills, have fun, and try new things in a college preparatory school environment. Participation in team sports is an essential part of the Dawson experience. On the many Dawson championship-caliber teams, student-athletes build their confidence to compete at the highest level of Colorado secondary school athletics.
Well prepared for continuing on after high school, 14% of the Dawson class of 2008 will be playing collegiate sports.
