2007-08 ALEXANDER DAWSON SCHOOL PARENT COUNCIL VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES
Our goal is 100 percent participation. Please help by signing up, and thank you for your commitment and support!
STEERING COMMITTEES:
After Prom: May, 2008
Parents provide a safe environment with fun activities following the prom for upper school students that attend (grade 9-12). This committee works with the student town council to plan activities. Numerous volunteers are needed to plan and organize the games and entertainment, provide decorations, act as chaperones, help with refreshments, solicit donations for door prizes, and have fun!
Arts Council: On-going
Volunteers are needed to help and support the arts department in a variety of ways. Volunteers will assist with theater productions, concerts and art shows.
Arts Council: Holiday Market: December, 2007
Talented and artistic people from the area gather at the Dawson gym to sell their unique creations to the public. It’s a good old-fashioned arts and crafts fair and a great place to buy gifts for the holidays. Funds raised from this event support the arts at Dawson. The vendors do most of the work. Volunteers are needed to help load and unload, set up and take down and to help with concessions.
Back to School Picnic: August 27, 2007
Help plan and organize the first, all-school event of the year. Volunteers are needed the day of the event to help greet families. Jump in on our newest tradition: all eighth grade dads get together to help break down tables, chairs, etc. and get to know one another as their kids begin their final year in the Middle School!
Booster Club: On-going
The Dawson Booster Club is an organization that promotes school spirit and encourages attendance at all sporting events. Fundraising is accomplished through the concession stand and by selling Dawson apparel. ALL PARENTS in ALL DIVISIONS, those with children on sports teams and those that don’t, are welcomed members of the booster club.
Booster Club: Concession Stand: On-going
The concession stand offers snacks and drinks after school and during sporting events. There are also opportunities to raise money selling admission tickets. The coordinator will organize volunteers’ schedules, buy and stock inventory, and make weekly deposits. Volunteers are needed to run the stand for approximately 45 minutes after school, and during athletic events.
Booster Club: Team Parents: On-going
Team Parents help the coaches, parents and support the teams by organizing snacks for away games, rosters and phone numbers, team dinners and communication between the coaches and parents.
Booster Club: Dawson Apparel: On-going
Help market apparel and other “schwag” to support our teams and our school! Get involved early and be a part of this new booster effort.
Box Tops Fundraiser: On-going
All parents and faculty can collect box top logos from General Mills products. Just clip the box top logo and deliver to any receptionist. Students also love to participate in this program.
Buddy System: Summer/Fall 2007
The Dawson Buddy System is designed to help new students feel a part of the Dawson community. A returning student is paired with a new student and asked to make contact with them over the summer. The returning student also helps the new student with any questions or concerns they may have, and helps to make the move to a new school a smooth and easy transition.
Dad’s Club: On-going
The Dad’s Club provides a venue for the male figures in our students’ lives to come to campus on a monthly basis for informational meetings and social interaction. The Dad’s club generally meets once per month. Volunteers are needed to determine topics for speakers and to help with the meetings.
Faculty/Staff Appreciation: On-going
This committee provides breakfasts, treats and tokens of appreciation to the entire staff at Dawson throughout the school year. Volunteers are needed to provide baked goods, bags of candy and other food items, which are simply dropped off at school upon request. Communication is typically via e-mail and sent approximately four times per year. Time commitment is minimal and the staff appreciates your thoughtfulness so very much!
Fundraising Event: Spring, 2008
Become a part of Parent Council’s big, social, fundraiser for Dawson, in previous years an auction, and meet parents, friends, faculty and administration. This is an enthusiastic and energetic group, and always produces a fun and successful evening—your talents and energy are always needed here!
Gift Certificates Program: On-going
Purchase gift certificates from a large number of national retailers and use them to buy gifts or give as gifts. A percentage of the dollar amount purchased comes directly back to parent council to support our activities throughout the year. See the flyer in your registration packet to learn how easy it is to support in this way! Forms are in the parent council folders by each receptionist’s desk and on the Dawson website, parents page, under fundraisers.
Grocery Certificates Program: On-going
Attention All Parents!!! This is the biggest and easiest fundraiser for all of Parent Council’s activities, and need 100 percent participation. Purchase paper certificates or gift cards that can be used as cash for purchases at King Soopers/City Markets, Safeway, or Wild Oats/Ideal Market. You can also use them to buy gas at King Soopers and Safeway stations. It is no additional cost to you! Parent Council benefits from the purchases you make at these selected stores. We will need volunteers for a variety of marketing and selling opportunities throughout the year. Forms are in the parent council folders by each receptionist’s desk and on the Dawson website, parents page, under fundraisers.
Golf Challenge: September, 2007
Spend a day at the Omni Interlocken Golf Course playing golf with friends and staff for fun and prizes. Funds raised from this event support athletics. Volunteers are needed to solicit prizes, create gift bags and help on the day of the event.
Grandparents Day: April, 2008
Volunteers are needed to work with the Director of Development to organize, set-up and welcome visiting grandparents and special friends.
Homecoming/Spirit Week: September 24-29, 2007
Please join us in our newest effort to support our students! This committee promotes Dawson school spirit over the week of homecoming. Each division provides activities for the week. Volunteers are needed from each school to plan and organize activities with the students.
Libraries: On-going
Help by assisting the director of libraries or assist with projects that support the lower, middle or upper school academic programs. Flexible and variable time commitments are available. For further information, contact Cindy Stahoviak, Director of Libraries (ext. 455), or Penny Dixon, Lower School Librarian (ext. 633).
Parent Engagement Network (PEN)/Parent Education: On-going
PEN is a network established by local schools to address the prevention of alcohol and drug abuse, address character education and relationship building and to foster community and communication. This committee hosts a variety of lifeskill speakers and events of interest to our parents throughout the year, and volunteers are needed to help with these activities.
Quiz Night: February, 2008
This is a zany night of pure fun and laughs for the grownups! Test your knowledge of trivia and other useless information against the headmaster, faculty and staff, and get to know other parents and new friends!
Sunshine Club: On-going
Sunshine Club acknowledges various events that occur in the lives of people in the Dawson community by sending an appropriate card or acknowledgement.
For additional volunteer information, please contact Paula Van Akkeren, Parent Council Volunteer Coordinator at 303-652-4923 or Pfvan@aol.com. Please complete the attached Volunteer Form.
