Stream Ecology
Students will explore Boulder Creek from the high country
to the plains. Each day we will travel to a different section
and observe the riparian habitat, collect water samples,
survey the macro-invertebrates living on the bottom and
measure the velocity and discharge of the water. This will
require students to hike short distances to the creek carrying
sampling equipment and waders.
The students will learn how to identify macro-invertebrate
species and use this information to determine water quality.
In the science lab the students will learn how to analyze the
water samples to determine the levels of dissolved oxygen,
hardness, alkalinity and pH. Students will make a computer
presentation of there data along with digital pictures of the
study sites. This will allow them to show the changes in
water quality as the creek flows from the mountains to the
plains.
