To the Student Body: In the time of COVID-19

Matt McDonald & Aliza Fassett
To the Dawson student body,

Matt and I wanted to reach out to all of you to let you know that we, as your student leaders, are still doing our jobs and still working towards making life at school better for all of you. These past three weeks have not been fun nor easy. I myself have been gutted with losing my senior winterim, the cancelation of my spring break trip, and the uncertainty of senior prom or even graduation. However, as the situation surrounding COVID-19 becomes more serious, my losses have become much less important to me. What is important to me now is the health of my community, especially my parents. I know many of us, especially me, have never been faced with the responsibility to keep our own parents safe from illness. I know that this is not easy. I miss seeing all of you more than I could have thought possible. But I hope that none of you lose sight as to why we are home and why our lives have been turned upside down. We aren’t staying at home because we have to, but because we care about the people around us and would do anything to keep them healthy. Not losing sight of this sentiment has helped me stay much more positive than I was initially, and I hope a gentle reminder of the massive responsibility that comes with staying home during this pandemic can help ease the frustration surrounding our current situation.

Matt and I are going to be working as hard as we can until this is over by communicating to the administration the needs of the students that arise as we settle into online classes. Please remember that we are all trying to make this as painless and ‘normal’ as possible and that Town Council is here to help make that happen. If you have a problem or a suggestion that you would like TC to implement, please reach out to me, Matt, or any other TC members. We are still looking out for you.

As for me, I want to remind everybody that no matter how difficult this situation becomes, our teachers and faculty are looking out for us. It’s quite easy to question and complain about our current situation, but we must play the cards we are dealt. We must continue to remind ourselves of how fortunate we are to still be apart of a school that cares and will do anything to make our next few weeks memorable. Every faculty member has been working tirelessly over the last few weeks, and we hope everyone appreciates their dedication and hard work. It is truly up to us, the student body, to make these following weeks productive and meaningful. We can no longer count on learning just from our teachers, but it will be up to us to step in and take initiative. More importantly, however, is that we all remain patient and understand that this transition will take time. Nothing is perfect in the beginning but as the weeks go by, we will become accustomed to this new schedule just like we have previously done. It’s important to remember during this crisis that we all play our part, not just for ourselves and family but for the entire country. I hope everyone has been following the CDC guidelines and I encourage everyone to do there part in trying to understand COVID-19 to better yourself and family. We have to remember that we are not alone and that the entire world is in this fight together. Please feel free to reach out to me or Liza if you have any questions, thoughts, or any suggestions for town council. Everyone on TC will continue to work for all of you, and we all hope to make these next few weeks memorable.

Sincerely,
Matt and Liza
