Citizen You: Day One
We arrived to some brisk weather in Washington DC today, but our travelers weren’t dissuaded as we spent the evening touring memorials after sunset! Our student tour guides introduced us to the World War II Memorial, Lincoln Memorial, Vietnam War Memorial, and the newly renovated Korean War Memorial before the group explored the sites.
Our 15,000+ steps today will be rivaled tomorrow as we spend the entire day on foot exploring more memorials and monuments, Smithsonians, and finally ending up in the Penn Quarter for dinner and a show at Ford’s Theater (“Shout Sister Shout!”)…
Day 2
What an epic day of sightseeing and experiencing! Students met in the morning to engage in conversation around the ideas of citizenship, rights, and responsibilities. We considered Rumi’s quote: “You are not a drop in the ocean. You are the entire ocean in a single drop,” and how Rumi’s words pertain to citizenship.
After a morning of walking along the Tidal Basin, taking pictures of the cherry blossoms, and touring the FDR Memorial, Jefferson Memorial, and MLK Memorial, we headed to the Mall to experience a few Smithsonians. To prepare for our trip to the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia, we visited the National Archives to see the Constitution, Declaration, and Bill of Rights. After some downtown and dinner in the Penn Quarter, we saw an absolutely amazing performance of “Shout Sister Shout,” about Sister Rosetta Tharpe, a gospel singer and largely overlooked pioneer of rock and roll and r&b music.
