Hawaii Winterim

Our trip began with a few days of classes and activities to kick off our learning. We had lessons in preparation for everything we are going to do in Hawaii.

Some highlights were a field trip to Fiske Planetarium at CU Boulder to learn about Polynesian celestial navigation and a morning with a hula history lesson and dance class courtesy of Dawson science teacher Elizabeth Perez.

Day 1 in Hawaii
On our first day in Kauai, we visited the Kapa’a First Hawaiian church to learn more about this historic institution. It was founded in 1836 by the Queen of Kauai at the time, who had converted to Christianity. Since that time, the church has preserved the use of the Hawaiian language. We attended the bilingual morning service and then had lunch with the congregation, some of whom shared their stories with our students about the importance of language and culture in their lives.
